2 gold Severums seem to have paired up either that or are swimming really close to each other,, and the both look male.. a slightly smaller one which looks females always gets chased away... but jsut enough so that that fish does not come near the two fish that look males. They seems to be hanging out at this large piece of drift wood.. and the pair just keep shaking their bodies, (not rubbing against the wood, cuz of an itch) but theyare jsut shakign them selves over it.. im not sure if this is correct but im just taking a wild guese here. Could it be that they are shakign to release stuff in that area to fertelize eggs?and i notice the two fish that haev pairs up which look like MALES are picking up rocks.. looks like for building a nest or something.. but i cud be wrong.. they looks like both males.. shouldnt it be a male and a female? unless the males are the nest builders with this type of fish.

as i type this post i can see them seem to be guarding a spot... and they shake their bodies over it =X_x=

Any one know whats going on? =^_^=

If it's vibrating sort of shaking then it's a breeding sign. They aren't spawning though, when they do the female will make a pass on whatever surface they choose and the male will follow and fertilize the eggs she drops.

If it's a slow full body shake then they're trying to decide who's boss.

hmmm ... it could be either one of those =S ill have to watch them more closely. The vibrating seems to be very fast.. but then again, now tha tu mentioned the whole showing whos boss thing... the pair that are doing it... both apear to be male with nice bright colored mask and long tails. Maybe be they are tryign to show whos boss, but their vibrating is pretty fast.. but theres a delay in between.. im not sure how slow, a slow shake who look cuz i havent seen what the fast vibrating looks like exactly... first time havign servs and first time seeing this behaviour. Hmm but thx for sharing with me. Ill post something if i find other things going on =^_^=

aww too bad i cant vedio tape this or somethign and post it =/... all threee of them are about the same size..4 to 5" but the smaller one/and more paller looking one which i assume is the female cuz i only have 1 female and 2 males, (bad ratio yes yes lol.. planning on getting another female soon) is being chased away by the two that keep shaking which are the one that appear to be male. But im starting to think now that maybe themales are tryign to show whos boss... the two pairs of males that are shaking are not chasing each other... they are how ever chasing the smaller paller looking one. Oh mys... this is interesting watching em do it =D

hmm whether they are doing this for breeding or showing whos boss.. this is nothing to worry about right? as long as itz nothign to worry about and i can just leave them in there and were all good =D

Whatever happens, happens =^___^=

damn getting sleepy. Thx again japes =^_^=

sounds to me like they are breeding, they would be cleaning of the wood geting it ready to lay on, severums are not the easiest fish to sex so i would have thought it's just your normal pair TBH.

keep us updated.

hmm I bought them from a Fish Breeder, and he selecter 2 males and 1 female cuz i asked for it, even though i know itz a bad ratio... lol =S going to get a another female soon.

The wood area where they have been hanging out has some sort of very very tiny pit, in the gravel i think, but you cant really notice it from afar., they seem to have move the large bits of gravel and now in that area are the smaller sizes of gravel underneith. The pair that keeps shaking, are the large ones and they dont seem to mind each others company.. unless.. they are trying to show whos boss and are both standing their ground envenly 0_o.. but then.. they also seemt o be chasing the smeller one, which is the one imp is the female. They will even chase the brown knife and the Ornate Bichir sometimes. =O

That would be cool if they breed, but i my brown knife will eat most of the eggs lol.

=^_^=

That's pretty weird if their both dudes.

Hi all,
I have one 3 inch definitely male gold Severum and one 2.5 inch female for about couple of months.
After all this time they don't seem to be paired off.
Many a times the male would chase the female and nip her fins and tail. The female keeps on running away from him most of the time and the male is always desperate to chase her especially after finishing their meals !!! The female would keep shivering her tail inviting the male. But as soon as he approaches her she would run away. Frustrated male would chase her violently as a result.
Yesterday I saw male chasing the female violently and I decided to separate the male from her. I shifted the male in a transparent plastic jar with small holes and hanging with the wall of the tank.
Separating the male has made him sad, I mean you can see it on his face : (. He is not enjoying his tetra bits which he likes most. On the other hand the female is swimming around the plastic jar. She also seems not to like the male being separated and I know as soon as I would release the male back in tank the male would chase her and she would again be gasping for air due to running away from her.

Please help me resolve their issue. I want to see them pairing and breeding as any hobbyist would admire.
Thanks in advance for sharing your valuable insights on Severum pairing and breeding behaviour..... The question is, is there any way to manipulate them to pair off ; ))
