Pairing Argentea

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
My argentea is a male that always fights with everything he lived with. The only fish he seems chill with is my Maculicauda, I always see those two hang out together in their own territory of the tank.

FYI, my argentea killed an L240, L018, L200 and an L128. Needless to say, I was quite ticked.

Damn you guys got yourselves some serial pleco killers.

I kept a lone male Argentea for years, upgrading as he grew and ultimately giving him a 125. He never bothered with other fish including cichlids like Cryptoheros and Thorichthys.

Then I decided to drop a number of juvenile Argentea in there in hopes that some sort of pairing may happen. Immediately after putting them in the tank, he went ballistic and harassed them endlessly until I took them out. Out of curiosity, I tried throwing some juvenile Synspilum in there with him shortly after. Same thing.

My point is, in my experience, these fish are extremely aggressive towards conspecifics. If you don't try and pair them off young, it may never happen. If you do decide to try, I would recommend a larger tank and a backup one to put the female in if the male doesn't take to her.

Good luck!

Thanks man. After hearing everyones stories im not gonna bother hes thriving by himself so why mess with it

Thanks everyone

I have an Argentea as well currently in a 125. I'm not sure whether its a female or male but its about 8" and he/she tormented everything in there except a smaller 4" red terror which he just kinds of shoos away. I have a 13" flagtail in there that he always bothers although not too rough (no torn fins and what not) But anything else he/she has killed.
