Pairing Festae

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Yes that is a female, ya she will corner everyone and protect the eggs. I'd remove the eggs because they won't amount to anything but stres for your other fish. Are you interested in getting rid of one of those females?

Yeah, I don't have the room for 4 (two tanks)

I suspect you're right about the second one being female as well. The one that dropped the eggs hasn't ever wanted to have anything to do with the other. I have two more in another tank, that if I had to guess are also female... :( Really trying to get a pair out of the 6 I picked up (4 left). The only other suspect gender is still pretty small, but so far showing the darker dorsal fin as well.

Here is another update, everyone is getting alittle bigger slowly but surely. Still no pair, but I've seen my littlest one and the newest one flaring up at each other and coloring up at each other a few times. They also hang out together more then the other two. So, as of now my money is on those two. We'll see though, sorry for the amateur photo's I'm still practicing. Some of my best shots have my fingers in them XD. So the first two pics are my largest at roughly 3in, followed by two of my smallest at just over 2in, then lastly but not least two of my newest at around 2.5inch. Then one of the group. That's all for now!IMG_5622.JPG IMG_5615.JPG IMG_5610.JPG IMG_5617.JPG IMG_5638.JPG IMG_5613.JPG IMG_5619.JPG

Well for those that care or curious, here is alittle update. No pair yet, but starting to see abit of slow color change finally. nothing drastic but you can start to see alittle red and such a very good looking trio if you ask me. Still not super sure on sex, although i have an idea I keep seeing them in different color tones that suggest otherwise.

Yeah #3 is the only one I'm sure about. #1 I think your right, but he does weird color changes sometimes. #2 I want to say is male as well but some times his dorsal gets all super dark in the front like a female. #2 just does weird things with his color all the time. He is the one I picked up from my LFS.

Well this post comes with a bit of sadness. Yesterday during my 14 hour work day two of my Festae paired up and killed the third. I don't know if the two bonded or just decided they where done with the little guy. But either way when i got home he was dead. So, now just down to the two. But on a bright side, The females colors are FINALLY starting to come through 8 months later and i finally have one that's starting to look like a female Festae! The two that are left seem very buddy buddy sometimes then the other times she is chasing the male around the tank. Pardon the slightly cloudy water I'm Currently giving them some Melafix for their torn fins that I'm assuming came from the tussel they had with the third :/IMG_5796.JPG IMG_5764.JPG

The male is still not really showing his colors, I'm assuming that just means he is not as sexually mature as the female. Hence why she gets so frustrated with him. It's actually rather funny to watch. She almost has little tantrums when he ignores her.

Thanks, oddly enough it's not the two I thought where gonna be the ones. I would have much rather been able to rehome the third. But it is what it is.
