Pairs of Cons in a 55g? how many

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Fish generally do not like other fish of their same species, unless it's a mate...

So 1 male Con to be happy... two may tolerate each other... 3 or more and they are likely to fight or the dominant one is likely to cause stress on the smaller one(s)...

Note: I am speaking in terms of Adults. The misimpression of success may be had if considering the fish as juvis...

I breed convicts for food although they don't grow fast. You need many grow out tanks in order to have a constant supply of feeders. I keep 2 pairs in a 55 with a divider. After the eggs hatch I transfer the young to a separate tank around two weeks. Immediately them lay eggs again. I have four 10 gallons I grow out in and a 45 that I put the larger convicts in before I feed them around two inches. If you have any questions just shoot me an message.

if you want aggresive fish that will breed lots for you and fill out a tank to the extent of overcrowding WITHOUT creating problems. go for african cichlids!
alot of the smaller growing brightly coloured malawis would be perfect for you :)

and although theyre better then cons you can use them as feeders.

in terms of food, Cons vs Mbuna is like a slice of bread vs Lobster

your fish deserve the best right?

I was able to keep two pairs of cons in a 55g tank. This only worked is both pairs had young. When only one pair was rearing fry they would chase the other pair into the top corners of the tank.

Why? I find african cichlids extremely uninteresting. I was also under the impression that convicts are far more prolific.

Why not suggest tetras, is there any info you gave that pertains even a little bit to the OPs question:screwy:

I say be very careful. Cons become very aggressive when spawning.
I have seen them knock holes in in 12 inch oscars. Other cons will fight really bad.
