heres a strange looking argus that was hatched out in nov. by a friend, hes in shed right now but you can still see where the black/brown is replaced by a gray/white color. also hes 29 inches long, still has a good 4-6 months until hes old/big enough to breed

Here is a new unrelated argus i just picked up, he/she is 6 months old and only 17-18 inches long. This animal was kept in a un covered fish tank with about 100f basking spot, this is why you dont listen to pet stores. Its now in a 4x2x2 with 8 inches of dirt and a 137f basking spot, im hopeing it will be able to hit near adult size. It already started to eat so thats a good thing. to give you an idea babies hatch out around 11-12 inches

Thats also why i am selling my last male cross and the extra female argus, as i'm going to have 2.2 or 2.3 adult argus next year and they will take up tons of space mostly with 2 4+foot male Argus. I want to have some unrelated animals in the group plus i hope to prove out the above male if its color trait is genteic

Cheers,
Bryan

Your lizards are simply gorgeous, love them all, very impressive:) Will find a way to have some one day;)

Thanks
here is the female i will be keeping then im adding 2 unrelated argus to the group and thats it. I want to hopefully get 1.2 out of this new one and the 2 babies, if i get 2.1 i will be selling one of the males. I want to have either a 2.2 or 2.3 group by next yearand have them all breeding.

beautiful lizards. they look so smart.
i have wanted an argus for a while but have heard alot of things about them not making good pets. i know it depends alot on the animal but do you think argus can make good pets like savs. savs being a 10 and niles a 1 what would you rate them?

to be honest argus make great pets if you want something you can look at and watch vs trying to hold them etc. Most monitors are more for looking at then picking up
Savannah are acually bad pets as 99.9% are wild caught and get into the hands of people that cant properly take care of them. You may be able to possibly pick up savannahs but you have to deal with the WC issue most people escailly beginers dont know how to handle. Savannahs like argus need at least an 8x4x4 for a full grown adult and need a good 1-2 feet of dirt. There are both good things and bad things with both an argus and a savannah being pets.
for example argus are very agressive during feeding and males can grow to 4+ feet while savannahs average 3.5-4 feet for males and are not usually agressive but will bite. argus are very active and can stand on there back legs vs an not so active savannah.
Its really about personal likes as i have had few different types of monitors and i like them as the following
1 pure flavi
2 argus
3 ackies
4 white throats

For most people ackies, black heads and a few other species are a better choice as most cant provide a 8x4x4 with 1-2 feet and a 130-160f basking spot.

Hope that helps

kind of, thanks. i got a sav and made sure he was captive bred. even being captive bred i think the price i paid, $65, was a little high. hes very tame and loves to be handled and pet. if i stop scratching him he'll give me a dirty look until a start scratching again, like a cat. he spends a good 4 hours a day out of his cage. i just wanted to know if i could ever have an argus like that?
if an argus won't work i think my next monitors will be a black throat then a water.

Sorry to break it do you but i doubt your Savannah was captivity bred, no one in the US in currently breeding regular savannahs. At best yours may have been CH/ FH, who did you get it from?
No you wouldnt be able to hold an argus, they are very active and dont stay still long.
I would suggest you not get both a black throat and a water unless you have (2) 12+foot cages

Getting cb savs is REALLY hard to say the least;) And the breeder has to show parents, eggshells and healty offspring. I supose some entusiasts out there are doing it, but aint easy to find them. At the current value babys comand no wonder

first rule when dealing with monitors or any other lizard assume everything is WC until proper proof has been seen as coura said as most species in the pet trade are wild caught. For example when im looking to buy an argus i will ask is it CBB or WC if they say CBB, i ask by who. If they give me a name of a wholeseller like bushmaster for exmaple im going to know its WC as they usually sell WC and rarely have true CBB animals. Its really a marketing thing as people want captive born animals so they tell them there CBB to make a quick sale.

that is the main reason most breeders dont want to breed savannahs as why would they send hundreds/thousands of dollars to breed them while the market price is 15-35 for a baby. there are a few people trying to breed savannahs but it wont be any available until next year if they are successful

I may of found a similar looking argus monitor as my pale one, im waiting for pics and if it looks similar im getting that one as well but it might be a little pricey

sorry for the hijack :( and thanks for the info guys. i had just talked to the store owner, whom i am very good friends with, and he bought them as cb, so i believed him. i was suspicious though as he was a very defensive baby. oh well, he's still great. why aren't farmed savs considered cb?
and yes, i am fully prepared to house both a black throat and a water if and when i get them. the only reason i don't have a black throat is because the spider booth was inline before the monitors at the last show, dam :(
new strategy: see everything, before i buy anything

sorry again bsmm, i just thought i jump on the chance to talk to someone i knew, knew what they were talking about when it came to argus. thanks.
