First off THANK YOU Phil (Oddball) for sharing your lifes work of collecting......

If you didnt already know we are very lucky to have Phil here sharing his knowledge and experience..... He has traveled the world in his youth collecting fossils and keeping fish.........I've had the pleasure of speaking with him on several occasions...... I stoped calling him because he keeps me on the phone so long the battery runs out..... But he really has some great stories to share...... :nilly:
 
"IN MY YOUTH"???!!! Geez, I'm not ready for a walker yet!! I'm going diving for megalodon teeth and mammoth fossils in 2 weeks. Nov. I'm scheduled to go fossil hunting in Ft Collins, CO for up to 30ft baculites, ammonites, and belemnites. That dig is all slogging through the mud of a lowered reservoir. I'd like to see folks half my age keep up with me on a dig.

That is a great thread. Too bad all thats left of the american aros is in fossils.
 
Hey Phil.... do you know of any techniques to make fossils from dead fish? Everyone has has lost a favorite fish........ i remember a technique using charcoal or sumtin......
 
There are no techniques for artificially fossilizing complex vertebrates, only theories. Vertebrate studies in this area haven't progressed above inducing egg embryonic cellular strands to absorb clay minerals in artificial seawater under pressure.
Most of the studies have been done on wood materials. I know of an experiment that converted oak cells to a cellular silicon carbide ceramic via a reaction with silicon monoxide. There's even an artificial fossilization technique for other wood materials using TEOS (tetraethyl orthosilicate solution). However, most of these studies are for the purpose of improving building materials and recycled materials.

I guess the gist of my reply is... it's either the taxidermist or, the tomato garden for your prized fish.
