to my amazement I saw in my LFS that they had 3 (all different sizes) of P.palmas/buett. They've been there weeks but I only noticed them because the bloke was cleaning the tank & they were out. They normally hide & stay in pvc pipes.
Now for question-how active are these fellas? My tank with Del & Senagal has no pipes so they are out all the time. I'd love to get 1 or 2 of these polys but not if they never come out. Observations from anyone?

it'll depend on the individual, but IME i think your observation of them at the lfs is right...in general, they aren't active and do like to hide.

Nice fish but I think you might have P. palmas polli and not P. palmas buettikoferi or P. palmas palmas. The coloring from what the pics show look closer to a polli. If you keep watch of the fins and they start to turn a gold/yellow color then you have palmas polli. If they turn a more orange/yellow color then you have palmas buettikoferi. Hope this helps and post more pics after the fish have settled.

those are definitely not palmas polli, which can have brownish fins also. palmas polli is easy to tell apart from the other two since its got different body shape, pattern and dorsal finlets count.

Just bought 7'' one from my LFS for £17 this morning-it had a much darker base pattern & I feel its a Buettikoferi. Will post pics when my missus gives me back nthe mobile phone camera. Very pleased though

I put the larger palmas palmas in the big boy tank - here's a shot with it and the Buettekoferi. The Buettekoferi is in the back, and a bit darker. I can barely tell them apart, but it's possible.

looks great in any case! is this the first one or the second one in your previous pics? since you have the actual fish, you can just compare with the pics xrayz posted or the ones in the link i posted :)

Well... yes and no... these fish were from the LFS which orders from Toyin... the darker fish was sold as a Buettekoferi. The lighter as a Palmas Palmas. So. Now I'm super confused.

Going to try to get some good shots of all four fish - both "Buettekoferi" and both "Palmas Palmas" and I'll post them.

Okay they aren't being photogenic or cooperative. I really think the two fish I brought home are separate species from each other, one palmas and one buettekoferi. The larger fish was big enough to move into the big boy tank... and now I can't tell the three of them apart by color, only by shape. The new fish is thin still. All three of them are pretty dark compared to the smaller new fish in the other tank.

This pic is from the day I got them and her color hasn't darkened yet... seen here with my hornball polli. So if you guys say the lighter is the palmas buttekoferi, then... then... she would be buettekoferi sold as a palmas... and the other fish sold as a palmas is actually a palmas... and the other two sold as buettekoferi would both be palmas. Right??

sorry what i meant earlier was is the fish in the front here the 1st 'palmas' or the 2nd 'palmas' in the two pics you posted on page 1?

and the fish in the back in this pic here definitely looks like a buettikoferi to me.
