Palmas palmas keeps jumping

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Lots of hiding spots and no hiding spots stops fighting, I chose no hiding spots and it solved the aggression issues in which the bichirs weren’t involved.

small polys really need hiding spots I have found I tryed removing them so I would see them more and they stoped eating
None of the bichirs in the tank are small and the one in question is 8” or so.
ok put that may also be making your bichir more skitish
A single bichir which was doing this before I removed the hiding places.

Some polys are just flighty. Roudy cats can cause it to panic.
The rather rowdy sun catfish have been forced to be with the bichirs as some of the plecos that were previously in with the bichirs started sucking so I had to move them to their own tank and I didn’t want to risk the catfish getting sucked on as well. This virus had killed every plan I had for a tank upgrade but I still can get a 6’ for the bichirs and catfish to inhabit within a year so I’m believing that the additional space will cause the catfish to calm down a bit hopefully helping with this situation. That is of course if the bichir doesn’t kill itself by doing this before then.

My 180 has 5 adult Polypterus with no ornaments, or plants and no territorial issues. Had a issue with a wc Endlicheri attacking my cb Endlicheri and I got rid of the cb Endli. I will say that the small Polypterus should have hiding areas but not necessarily.

Another fish is bothering this Palmas. You can attempt with more hiding spots but if the fish is still jumping. The suncat is prolific at targeting this Palmas. Had a friend with a Synodontus who would beat up a 12” retropinnis. No other bichirs but this retro no matter what.

Ok, I shall add some hiding places and hopefully that will cause the sun catfish to take it down a notch. He doesn’t intentionally go after the palmas from what I’ve observed but he’ll swim around the tank very fast and end up bumping into the palmas which then causes him to go airborne. Perhaps some decorations to make it so that he can’t build up the speed he is able to at the moment.
