Plants are the way to go and it's possible to have rays with them. Floating plants, bog plants, etc...

to me i guess the most challenging part is to make space for the rays at the bottom. what can i use to support without taking much of the bottom water space?

I think the best strategy would be to cover the sides/back with styrofoam/greatstuff and embed driftwood branches into it. You can then cover the foam with cement or a silicone/cocofiber coating and mount your plants on the wood. That way you'll have lots of planting space above the water while not taking up too much floor space. I've also seen people make fake branches out of pvc pipe covered in cork and attach them to the background/sides.

hmm sounds like a cool idea i would build it like a plywood pond with a window on the ground then build up around it with windows around it. i would go for a floating platform with the roots of the plants dangling down. would look amazing .

and bruce just so you know... they filter the water very well... they absorb all forms of the nitrogen cycle...so if you think of aesthetics and funtion they are perfect addition...
