Panaques and Plywood Tanks?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
L418 Titan is a hard one to get a hold of, I haven't see them for sale.

Turns out L404 is illegal to export, which explains why I haven't seen any for sale yet. I've seen some pictures of L418 around here, and they look really nice. If given the option, I'd probably be stocking with L27 if I go with large plecos, so it can stay as a true biotope. I'm gonna check around when I go back to the LFS I work at this week, talk to my buddy who is in charge of ordering for the store. I know we've had L091 before, but I didn't see how much they were going for. I haven't seen phantoms either, but, then again I hadn't been looking for them until recently.

Here the damage big royals can do. This tank about a year old.

Oh jeez... I've had my royal for less than a year (4.5" long) and all he has done so far is poop like crazy and strategically rip off tons of wood, so it clogs the filter intake! I'm leaning more towards the Medium plecos the more I think about it. When I think about how long it'd take some royals to get big enough to have a snowballs chance in hell of properly venting a pair, and the amount of driftwood that they'd demolish, it seems less and less appealing for this tank. Sure, I absolutely love Panaques, but I'm not sure this is the right tank for one.

Both of those Panaque are from the Amazon basin, not Orinoco, so no good for a biotope. Panaque nigrolineatus (L190/L330) and L191 are from the Orinico basin.

Wow. I just spent a little time looking, and you're 100% right. Apparently the main species of fish I was gonna use isn't from this area either. I asked a while ago about rio Orinoco fish, never bothered to fact check when some guy said Geo Red Head Tapajos (From the Rio Tapajos). When looking at plecos, I got to L027 and saw that some people call it Tapajos royal, so I went on to assume that this guy was from the same area too. Damn... Looks like this biotope will be largely different, or just end up as a slightly mixed tank. Thanks, I really appreciate it. I thought L418 was from Peru though?

Planet catfish.com is a big help, you can find facts and origins on type of plecos.
