What other sensors are out there? Or do you shoot with film?

along with CCD there is also CMOS, and Live MOS for DSLR's.

the latest issue of PCPhoto explains sensors very very well.

The CMOS sensor you'll find on the new D3 and D300 Nikons. CCD for the rest.

CMOS is faster, uses less power and has a lower cost than CCD, Canon uses strictly CMOS sensors in there current DSLR lineup, entry-pro.

Live MOS is what you'll find on the panasonic advertised here. aswell as olympus and the leica digilux 3

CCD sensors-

Lower inherent noise and better inherent image quality than CMOS.

CMOS for one. It's the sensor Canon uses and the sensor Nikon started using in the D300, the D700 and the D3.

Gotcha:)

Well I think the question has been well and truely answered.

The CCD sensors are not very good with noise typically. Also as another personal preferance of mine is to stay away from nikons if you plan on doing some long exposures, even though the newer cameras have the CMOS sensors with are much better in the noise department, they use a powerful "in camera" noise reduction program that screws with long exposures. Just something else to think about.

Don't you mean the CMOS has lower noise than the CCD? At higher ISO and long exposures.
