Well, my dad said that they are fine and he has had fish tanks for 20 years so I don't know what the water is like but...

I mean zero disrespect, but I’ve been keeping fish 40 years and no one can tell what the water quality is for certain without test results.
I’m just trying to steer you in a direction that will solve the problem.

What does 'don't seem to do well' means? What temperature is the tank at? What gravel do you have? Any tank mate that might be bullying them?
