Panda uaru disease

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Looks like I'm making a run to the lfs today for meds. Would you mind explaining your methodology? Disease treatment is one area of fish keeping I'm not very strong in.

MG is more toxic at low hardness and pH the sulfa buffers it and in conjunction with the mg will fight any secondary fungal or bacterial infection. The heat and salt will or should kill the ich in the main tank and water changes will reduce the numbers. You could use quick cure instead of mg if its available.

Im still wondering why this fish is so affected but the others are managing to fight off infections on their own. Did anything happen to this one fish to compromise immune response? Beetlebug515 Beetlebug515

I understand. Out of curiosity, how do you feel about the treatment I've been using? Paragaurd and metro. Is there any reason why I haven't had very good success with this treatment during this outbreak?

Not that I know of. The only difference between this one and the others is he is a bit smaller. As far as I know, the group he came in all came from the same place. I am inclined to believe they are WC because of the size I purchased them at and the fact that they weren't trade ins. Maybe that has something to do with it. He doesn't get bullied any more than any of the other pandas, and I've never separated them.

Metro will not have any effect on ich. I don't have any experience with paraguard so I can't help there.

Ich can only be killed during the free swimming stage once encysted meds can not get to them. The bath will help fight secondary infections and help prevent costia which is common during heavy infestations. If heat and salt aren't working add quick cure or mg at half dosage to the main tank. Heat must be maintained at a min of 87°F to be effective. Good aeration is important too at elevated temps so make sure you add an air stone or have good surface agitation.

So I wasn't able to get my hands on any malachite green today. I did get some quick cure though. I also had a formalin dip recommended. Any thoughts on that?

Quick cure is mg & formalin.

Yes. I should be more specific. 37% formalin solution dosed at 3.5 ml per 4 gallons. Aerated for 30 minutes then dip for 30-60 minutes. I was told that this is a bit of an extreme measure, but should help.

This should be done in tank water which in your case is pretty low in hardness. That's where the sulfa would act as a buffer. Did they take your water perimeters into account when making this recommendation?
