I picked up one of these guys at a LFS this weekend. I have never heard of or seen them before and there seems to be minimal information on him (hence why I HAD to have him). I searched the forum and they seem pretty rare. Does anyone know any more information on them? Water parameters, habits, anything? All I know right now is they get very large, come from Thailand, and that I am going to get another. He has been on the left side of the tank swimming against the glass since I got him yesterday. It's a great looking cat, even though he wont hold still for a camera.

Looking good and when it gets a little more size you will notice the wide tail fins that these guys get.

I am actually on my way now to pick up another. I put him in a little fry net for now with the lights off so he won't hurt himself. I figured he would calm down overnight, but that hasn't been the case so far. Have to stay on a ship tonight so I will report back tomorrow.

Okay and I've noticed that they tend to move up and down as they rub against the walls of the tank as if they are trying to go through the glass.I suspect that they do this when they are kept alone or if there are not enough of them in the tank to interact with.

Well I now have two catfish frantically swimming against the glass. They seem a bit calmer than they were yesterday, but the one I got on Sunday looks bruised on his nose.

Unfortunately, I have to think about the other fish in my tank who are not fond of massive current. I have never had a fish that wouldn't settle in more than a few hours. They wont eat and they are beating themselves up. I might not be ready for these guys.

Are they the black ear? Resemble a paroon in that shot. Anyhow, I'd turn off the light to lessen stress. Make sure the water's pristine and there is no bullying and the oxygenation is supreme.

Leaving them in containment is no good. It actually stressed the one you did it to a lot. They may die from so much stress - rehoming then confinement.

Fuzzy shot but it looks like the two that I have with my paroon. The tails are shaped different in the two species and both are impressive looking as the fish get bigger. The black ears have more rounded tips on their tail fins....Beetle what else are you keeping in the tank? I have the paroon and four medium sized dats with my two black ears. They rarely rub the glass after a few months of having them and I suspect that other fish in the tank will help them settle in.Keep your water pristine so any potential wounds on the snout don't get infected and wait until they settle down.

How big is your tank? These kind of fish are known to be flighty especially in small spaces. I agree that you need strong current for them too. In the wild they live in large bodies of water with rapid movement. If you can't provide them with what they need maybe consider re homing them? It'd be shame to lose them :(
