I've been seeing these for sale lately, but is anyone currently keeping them?

Based on the wild pictures I know they grow huge, but was just curious how fast the growth in aquariums was.

Here’s a great thread on an Aussie mangrove jack, also in the Lutjanus family. They don’t grow as large as PBB. Would you consider one of these instead? You still need a very large aquarium for a single fish…

I have just received my juvie PBB last week. They are a SOLITARY fish (some snappers are schooling but your larger snappers such as Cubera and PBB are usually found alone) as are Spot tail bass which are also from around their (PNG/Indo). Had a buddy get lucky and keep his with dats, kept my old big one I sold with a Clarotes Laticeps for near a year and a half. I would say expect one to grow from roughly 5-8" to roughly 12-14" in a year and some change. Info on them being freshwater is foggy at best, some say no salinity is fine whilst others say they need brackish at the minimum. I have had three now and all three have been kept in freshwater. They are skittish at a small age. This was a Holy Grail fish for me for about 5-6 years after reading about them living in PNG jungles and growing to huge sizes in freshwater rivers/freshwater fed lakes. I am fortunate to have a lot of tank space. He is starting off in a 75 gallon which may suit him if I am lucky for maybe 6 months and thats once again if I AM LUCKY. These are true wet pets. They need lots of cover and space, as well as warm temps. my absolute favorite from this genus!

surfermike915 surfermike915 do you have any pics or vid of the ones you’ve kept previously?

Yes. Not as many for my second one. This is the one I had that grew the best and largest. Lost my second one in my move in which I lost many of my monsters.

Don’t mind the FX6 micro bubbles.

The one I am maintaining right now has spent a lot less time in captivity, it comes from Indonesia. He’s still very skittish and no personality. Once he’s done QT he will come to life I reckon. I need to get him comfortably eating shrimp and fish and then pellets.
