I'm aware it's not easy and is uncommon in home aquariums but I have 4 para plecos and wonder about maybe trying to breed them at some point. Not sure on the gender just yet so I'm focusing more on the biotope part in just keeping them in general. Any tips/secrets to keeping/breeding these guys? I've done a little research online already but I like to hear personal experiences and stuff you don't read online.

Please be patient...not everyone has these plecos.

I've kept 50-70 different kinds of plecos in my 20 years of fishkeeping, but never them.

I have 4 L75's in my 300 (one's tail is in my avatar pic). Still a bit small around 4" but I think Im going to add another 3 or 4 to see if i get any activity. One of my favorite plecos. lost one last year at about 7". very sad day.

Shane Linder(planet catfish) has some cool articles on breeding them in captivity. I'll see if I can dig it up.......

Since i haven't had any breeding activity yet, I'm afraid I don't have too much to share other than they really like company of other fish in the tank. When alone they hid all the time but once introduced to a large community they feed during the day with all the big boys.

No problem. Para's are my favorite loricariids and there's really not a lot of folks keeping them which is a shame. They are one of the most beautiful plecs IMO.

best of luck with yours!
