A friend has two 8" male Parachromis loisellei, a 5" female P. managuense and an 8" C. johanna he's looking to sell.
I've got a 180 going up this weekend that will house my 2 C.l.cf."Atabapos" (12" and 11") and a pair of H. temporalis (6" and 4"), so it's very sparcely populated. Do you think any of these fish will do well with my current fish or should I pass on the whole bunch.

If you got the pike it would most likely fight alot with the ones you all ready have

as for the parachromis it depends on the temperment of the fish ask the friend how aggressive they are i would try it i have a pike with my jaguar cichlid no problems at all she hasn't payed any attention to any of the pikes i've had

as for the chocolate cichlids they can stand up for them selfs so they ( should ) be fine

So i'd say go for it and get one or mabye both of them if they live to gather with no problems if there seperate then be careful parachromis are usually very aggressive twords each other as for the pike i wouldn't do it usually you have to raise pikes from very young to get them to live peacfuly to gather

I have a male jag with a pair of atabapo fires. It works well for these fish, not because they ignore each other, but because the match up well in terms of aggression and speed. They spar over pellets. :D Nothing ongoing, though...strike and move on. Eventually the jag will probably grow large enough that this won't work so well. So...I agree that it would depend on the particular fish. I wouldn't really consider that tank to be sparsely populated, when adult sizes are reached, so I would add at most one of the parachromis, leaning towards the loisellei.

my jag does fine w/ my pike, too.

should be ok

is the 180 open or you have wood and what not

Very open. I've got some flat rocks propped on larger rocks for caves, some driftwood and fake plants mounted on siliconed gravel but there's a lot of open space for cruising.

I dunno man. Adding a pike to a tank that already has an existing pair of Crenicichla isn't exactly a great idea. LoL. A pair of pikes can really OWN a tank. They just allow other fish to be in there with them. You throw in another Crenicichla that isn't part of the pair bond, threatening their food supply and territory, its difficult to predict the outcome. Chances are though you will have a pretty beat up johanna.

The Parachromis might get beat up at first, but should sort things out. The only thing to watch out for is the jag and the lois. pairing up. Then it WILL break loose in that tank, especially if they breed.

I know you have another tank, hopefully anyway, so go ahead and get them. Keep the other tank as a reserve backup incase stuff starts hitting the fan.....

I have no intention of throwing another pike in there, I'm dumb not crazy! :nilly: I was pretty much trying to decide which of the cichlids would work. I've decided I'm just going to try one of the loisellei and do like you said and have another tank ready just in case. Final plan is something like: Pikes, chocolates, couple of Geo's and 4-5 black-bar silver dollars. What do you think of that combo? Oh yeah, filtration is huge wet/dry, Fluval 404 and Fluval 403.

This is an interesting topic.

I quite possibly may soon try and keep a Motaguense with a Xingu I and a few polypterus...
