Coatepeque is a clear crater lake while snorking I would see managuense laying on their sides acting as if dead as I approached they would always swim away I did not see any capturing prey that way though.....cool to see I did not see this anywhere else where I've seen managuense in other locations....
 
Its interesting that you say that it was in a clear crater lake, because the dive this article was written on was at a location very similar to that in the Yucatan peninsula, Mexico. To me, this sounds like a way Parachromis evolved to hunt in clear water environments where ambush was not an option.
 
i've seen them in apoyo also which is a clear crater lake with prob. less cover but didn't witness that behavior, coatepeque has more vegatation too if that helps...both are clear lakes
 
I once owned many years ago a 12 to 13 inch Managuense who would lay on his side on the surface and ever so slowly inch up on minnows in his tank intill he was in range to strike. It was always alot of fun to watch. I have breed two other pairs over the years since them and I never saw them display the same behavior.
