I bought this pair of what I thought to be motaguense yesterday at A Place For Pets in Burien, WA, near Seattle. However, one of the owners, Kevin, who has been keeping cichlids for years and is very knowledgeable, told me they were loisellei but I have never seen loisellei with so much red, especially on the female. The male also reminds me of the Parachromis from La Ceiba in body shape, but looks almost identical to Aquamojo's Red Tiger Mota. In the photos and when he is stressed he looks like a loisellei with a little hump, but I can assure in person both fish are much much more red. What do you think? Sorry for the poor photos and dirty glass.

gold motas?

mota's, besides the off colors, the body shape and snout shape is completly off for loiselli.

Hmm, i have a wild Freddy i bought from Rapps that looks a lot like the less barred one.

Mind if i put his pic up for comparison, i'd be interested to see if ours are the same?

pm mojo and rapps and ask them. i'm more than sure they could help you better than a lot of us could. but i'm going to vote mota because of the body shape.

I think its the Freddy La ceiba race. Here is a pic of my female she is from Rapps

Gobucks, go ahead. Here are photos from mojo that show how my male looks alot like both the yellow head fish from La Ceiba as well as red tiger motas:

These yellow heads are dead on except for the body coloration. The body shape and colors in the fins are identical.

Mo's male RTM has a more pronounced hump than my male and the colors are much more a brown red than the orange red on mine. Also both motas have more of an "underbite" than my fish.

If it werent for the orangey red coloration I would have no doubt that my fish were yellow-heads.

Did Kevin happen to remember where he got them? La Ceibal are only available from 3 specific sources. I believe a lot of his centrals come from Conkel, which means they wouldn't be La Ceibal.

He has a decent memory, I have been able to figure out certain species by which wholesaler he got them from.
