Hello my name is rui and i am from portugal, this is my first experience with large typed cichlids

i have recently purschased a Parachromis managuensis, and everything seems to be fine, he is just a litle shy, so i even keep the aquarium light turned off and keep just the room light on, he seems to like it more because he tends to hide a lot with the aquarium light off, maybe he feels unsafe because i don't have many hideouts yet.. So far he is eating sinking pellets so i don't worry about that part, but he is a bit picky with food ( spiting frozen brine shrimp sometimes ).

I just got some pictures so you can help me to find out if it's a male or a female, i think he is a male because he flares and strikes the glass when he sees its own reflection and in the local fish store he was the most colorful and the dominant one, although i am starting to have doubts because when i turn the lights on the fish becomes pale ( maybe stress for beeing afraid ) so i find it hard to figure him out

here are some pictures.

The fact that he/she is eating is a great sign, feeding habits are one of the best ways to diagnosis a fishes health. Continuing to leave the tank light off until you notice a change in behavior is a good idea. I would agree with you and say your fish is a male, but it is a little difficult to determine at that size. Keep up the good work Rui!

Yea mine always liked the light off til recently. As long as he's eating I wouldn't be too concerned. I would add more cover. His fading may even be due to your decor. Darker substrate and decor will darken your fish. Do you have a tank shot. We can help advise you on what you should add and or remove.

thanks guys, he is in a temporary tank with white sand, because i am changing the master aquarium ( selling some of the fishs and etc ), that one has black sand, it was a cichlid comunitary, in that big one i have 1 Nandopsis salvini, he is quite big and he is one my favorite fishs and i am thinking about keeping him along the jag, do you guys advice it ? or do i need to find him other tank mates ?

It would also help if your salving is currently bigger than your jag. Then maybe he can establish dominance before the jags too large.
