yeah his tanks are great. Definately going to go for the slow moving turbid water theme. the only thing i cant figuare out now is what kind of background would go. thanks for the advice on substrate, im definately going for sand and they are the plants i had in mind to use, keep the ideas coming guys. Iv bought 2 great pieces of wood today that i will post pictures of. Gonna go grab sand tommorrow and some large stones, pebbles and a couple of flat stones. i found some great green slate that i was going to try to incorporate into hte background but i just want any other ideas on backgrounds.

If you have the money and the time to install it, get a 3d background... nothing can beat a good 3d background. I'm even planning on emptying my tank to install one.

If not, I'd go with black. Not a fan of printed backgrounds, they never look right.

iv had a look at the cichlid forum and they had some nice slate backgrounds, iv just recently got my hands on some great looking green slate but im just not sure if it would go or not with the look im going for. to be honest the background is the part im really stuck with now. I would make a 3d background just a bit clueless on the design. should it be rocks, roots, plants or stone?

Yellow-Brown sand (not too dark/light), but i would definately recommend a higher grade. The sand in my Jag tank is very fine (low grade), and as a result of their obsessive digging, constantly floating mid water and every 3 or so weeks i empty about 4" worth pf sand from the fx5. Learn from my mistake.

Other than that, they prefer open water, with a cave or rock to chill behind, and mine seemed to fight for the shaded area under the fake plant near the surface, whether there was a cave or not.

well busy day really, managed to get sand (listened to advice and got high grade sand) some great large stones and some small cobbles and pebbles aswell. Managed to get the plywood tank finally sanded down on the outside and according to the mrs it is now finally of house standard (if it would of been sanded anymore it would of been smoother than the bumper on my car). Managed to get some pond paint from a company called blagdon, it wont be for waterproofing as its already well an truly waterproof, its to paint the inside black because im going to do the green slate background and i want the bits behind the cracks to be black. Wasnt going to do the slate as i thought it doesnt exactly go with the biotope i was thinking of but this stuff is going to look beautiful on, i had a quick mess around with it at the back of the tank and it looked great even rough, plus it goes a real dark green when its wet and i could just imagine it when its grown in a bit. The glass comes for the front of the tank on saturday, so il fit that on the day and hopefully be able to start the background on monday or tuesday
