I don’t know
JW-
Has anyone successfully kept any parachromis pairs with a amphilophus pair?

Just speculative if I ever get rid of my fronts what I could do with my 125.

I would think a pair of milder species from those two genuses would be really cool together.

My thoughts were lyonsi & freds/loisellei/mota-

But looking for others experiences not opinions

I really don't believe that a 125 would house these guys together much past juvenile size without the dominate fish killing the other. Maybe you can get away with a female of each but that's a big MAYBE as I have had females be just as belligerent as males before.

Id also like to add, its not about shear aggression its about territory. These are both territorial cichlid species and a 125 if rather a small foot print for a couple of foot long fish to have to cohabitate with each other.

I'm sure someone will come along and say Ive kept XXX with XXX in a 55 gallon for years.... You are really rolling the dice with these guys. You can try to be ready to have a plan B as a re-home strategy ASAP. These guys call easily kill one another is a short time and you could have a dead fish on you hands when you are at work etc.

Yeah, this kind of setup could be done, but not really in a 125.
This guy has a pair of Midas and a pair of Managuense, but they are in a 500 gallon tank.
Is that GuapoteMel's setup? he has a shoal of amphs with Dovii

Yeah, not in a 125. Opinion, not experience, because experience tells me it would most likely result in one or more dead fish.

OP was enquiring about 2 pairs, which is not anything like the tank in the vid, where tempers and aggression is spread among numerous fish. And yeah, size is always a factor with aggro species.

I do also have a crowded CA community in a larger tank.
Which is why I'm thinking of downsizing my tang setup, love the calvus and comps but think fronts are kind of a let down.
But once again this is all speculation from and avid follower of the site and someone eager to learn more about fish keeping- as I've only kept smaller CA pairs to date.

So, spitballing, you have a 125 it's been running over a year, hard water around 8.0 out of the tap- and you want two pairs of CA cichlids- and are have plenty of dither schools, catfish and plecos you can move around.
What two pairs would/could you keep.
Nics+blackbelts?
Carpintis + lyonsi
Suggestions?

If I was to attempt this, I would be thinking more along the lines of some very tough target fish, not dither schools, catfish, or plecos. Personally if it was me, I would stick to one pair, keeping one end of the tank set up for breeding, and the other end designed with escapes if things get out of hand, as they often do with most of the species that you have mentioned. This is why many breeders of CA cichlids keep dividers in place, it's not for aesthetic reasons, it's to prevent casualties.
