Paradigm Shift, almost completed. You?

I agree with you, fancy goldfish and koi make me feel connected to the past.

I hear you, I have been keeping fancy goldfish on-and-off for about thirty years. :headbang2

About six years ago I converted my 135 reef (running for 7 years at that point) to Fancy Goldfish. About a year ago I shifted gears again and switched to SA cichlids. My remaining goldfish are now in my 65G hex - I still love them, but I am now thoroughly addicted to Eartheaters.

If this pattern continues I will be switching paradigms to something completely different in about five years... ;)

The main reasons I love keeping them:

1. They remain engaged with the owner
2. They eat very well
3. They display very well
4. They give a sense of well being to a fish room
5. They maintain a vast and storied history
6. They seem to enjoy life

Very good points, hope you enjoy your new paradigms for a long long time.

May I ask, what do you find more suitable fish keeping wise with the fancy gold fish ? And as much as I respect gold fish, (they started this hobby after all, and are much more than just feeders) I would get bored with tanks of the same type fishes, but thats just me.
Though I admittedly find the singletails more boring (with the exception of tamasaba and willow telescope), the fancies actually are not especially if you like the challenge of breeding them and even investing in show quality ones particularly with ranchus and orandas. Though fancies are very prone to health issues, if well cared for, they are very rewarding and can interact very well with their owners, much more than you give them credit for.:)

Years ago when I only had one tank, I would at times go with a tank of red cap orandas and black moors. I can't imagine going back to it now that I have monster tanks.

I could see going one tank with some koi, but not all of them. If that is your thing - more power to you - but it definitely isn't something I am going to try.

As Brian said.. more power to you, I would quit the hobby completely before I ever specialized in goldfish.. Koi are pretty cool but i've always just thought of other goldfish as ugly and more or less boring waste machines

I feel ya, Goldfish are, and most likely will remain, my first love! I've got three very spoiled, and big, fancies in an 80G, but as I'm moving across the country I'll have to leave them where they are (they're the resident 'pets' at my Dad's truck shop) :( .

Because I'm going to be an art student for the next 4-5 years, I'll probably have to keep my tanks pretty small for a little while. I love goldfish too much to keep them in small tanks! Hopefully I'll be able to get back into goldfish when I can have and maintain a few green water tubs. Maybe even start breeding them!

I wouldn't mind branching off and keeping some brackish puffers, dwarf cichlids and maybe even start a marine tank though!
