Parasite and injury questions..

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
tbh i dont know . both worms seem to apear for different reasons and at different times they also apear and swim differently and have a different apearance but generally people lable both as planaria so i dont really know :s

i would imagine the causes are similar to planaria though and that its down to excess food . you could try cleaning the filter if thats where they are coming from though.

either way im sure they are harmless but they may indicate that there is another issue that needs addressing ( like overfeeding or filter needs cleaning )

good luck , hope it helps :)

If you ask me Planaria is more of a sign of filter quality rather then water quality.

I have mad planaria all over, all the time. My drip runs 80-100 gallons of new water into the tank everyday. I always test 0,0, less then 5. To me these tests seem irrelevant, as obviously my filter is an issue or there wouldn't be planaria.

This is why I'm changing the filtration system.

These little flat worms known as Planaria are present in most aquaria, they survive in low numbers in and around the substrate, their presence only becomes more evident through a build up of organics and uneaten food particles within the tank.To reduce their numbers more attention is needed during tank maintenance but the biggest cause is overfeeding, take away the food source and you take away the Planaria..simple!
Alan, even the best bio systems can suffer with this, the problem happens within the tank before anything hits the filter.

Well i cleaned the filters when i switched em all around but cant remember for sure if i cleaned the fluval 405 that i left on that tank so im gonna clean it this week just in case. I took out some driftwood that food sometimes would get stuck behind and will do a better job of making sure i get any extra food out of the tank right away.
I appreciate all the info guys!
