PARASITES IN MY CICHLIDS: looking for advice

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
There is a difference between not allowing someone to give an opinion and giving a different opinion in response. Quit crying about it, this is a discussion forum. If you want to have an opinion where no one can respond with a different opinion, go make your own website. I'm done with this thread, hope the OP's fish recover.

What do I feed? NLS.

Other food worth consideration IMO: omega one, ocean nutrition, Xtreme aquatic food, AND hikari. There are probably a couple brands I'm forgetting. I'm not anti-hikari... I think they make some good products. I fed carnivore with good results to a BGK. I just didn't agree it is "by far the best Cichlid food." I think everyone should research and ask questions and make their own decisions.

Clout works very well. But do it in a hospital tank if you have one.

Not sure where as a debate over the best fish kibble helps OP's or anyone else's cause.

I'm not familiar with "Clout" - However it is definately something I will learn more about. Cupramine, I am somewhat familiar with, a few of our LFS's treat their systems with this because of the varing sizes and species of both freshwater and marine livestock. Prazzi's is too rough for many species to handle. I also liked his suggestion about using a BUCKET - keeps the cooper out of the tank. I've used cletted cooper for externals with great success, it's the only med I'll use for toothed Characiformes.

2 of Op's fish died, doudtful they died from internals as internals can take a very longtime until they are large enuff to even cause any real damage. It's possible that if OP used clout, prazzi, or cupramine in a Bucket - theses fish would still be alive.

I’m probably late in posting but I’ll give an opinion on a somewhat aggressive treatment but may help you. The first thing would be an Epsom salt bath in a 5gal bucket to purge the system of most of the parasites and egg cysts this will make the following treatment easier. One table spoon of Epsom salt per gallon of water, place the fish in the bucket for 15 to 20 mins. Watch the fish for any signs of distress during the bath and remove immediately if any sign is noticed. In a 2nd bucket have clean water and remove the fish to this once the bath is completed. Then in a hospital tank treat with Metronidazole or a medacation that contains Metronidazole as per instructions. Metronidazole is effective against most internal parasites and also the anaerobic bacteria that often follows or co-exists with an infestation of this type.

Once treatment is complete and the fish is cured address the diet. In my experience two foods are a very good staple diet for GTs the first is NLS Thera +A and Hakari Bio-Gold+. Another good food that I use is Omega One Veggie wafers and/or skinned peas occasionally during the week. I wouldn’t give it anything too hard to digest for at least couple of weeks after treatment is complete. No Krill, worms ect.

I hope this helps, good luck

Another update:

My gt is still alive and its color is looking good; gaining lots more green and is probably enjoying life without sickness. Still isn't eating like it used to but it's diet is coming back. The mysterious pit between it's eyes is getting smaller also.

My treatments were API general cure which may or may not have knocked off my eyl and brp. Both fish were very healthy prior to the sudden illness and had survived a previous ick outbreak and ate well.

I also used macaryn 2 after the API (the 2 fish had already died bythis time) to treat a potential case of poPeye that my gt may have had. As mentioned, fish is still alive and back to normal.

I have always done 25% weekly water changes with nov aqua treated water.

My fish diets include all omega one products; veggie kelp pellets, tropical color enhancing pellets and mysis shrimp for desert.
