I have been lucky to experiment with various set ups trying to encourage this endangered cichild to breed and survive aggression. Large tanks with few fish end up in disaster. For the last 1/2 dozen years, I have tried crowding them with Etroplus canarensis as the video shows with good success. However, once larger the harassment on the Etroplus causes them to cease breeding. I have moved adults in a tank with Ptychochromis grandidieri at a ratio of 3:1. Aggression is still at bay but only the grandidieri breed.
This particular species is of much interest because it is difficult to breed and that makes it a prime candidate for extinction. The other viable solution is to use large ponds. In nature it is found among others with Paretroplus kieneri with which occasionally hybridize. Their diet in the wild consists of small invertebrates.
