Paroon Shark questions

they've been in my tank for about 2-3 months..

also, because you seem to know a bit about paroons...
they haven't grown as fast as i had thought.
i got my aro around the same time. he was half the size he is today.
i think the paroons were about 3.5-4 inches... they've only grown about an inch...

they're on a diet of pretty much everything.
fillets, market shrimps, worms, and the main being carnivore pellets.

they eat once daily until their bellies are about to explode but no explosive growth.

do you have any feeding tips?

Feed in small(er) amounts more frequently. Like 3 times daily. Breakfast lunch and dinner. They will grow faster.
 
well, i've taken the advice of feeding 3 times a day in smaller amounts and its worked..
my two paroons are about 8inches now... they've grown. i think they should have started roaming by now.

funny thing is, they're still swimming strictly on the bottom. they don't even actually swim.
they basically catch the current coming out of an internal filter and just sit there. like all day!!
i've even tried removing the internal filter, but then they just catch the current of the external filter...
just when the light turns out, they start roaming around mid level.

they're such beautiful fish, wish they would swim around more when the lights are on. hmm... any ideas?

i don't think its the arowana, since once i turn off the lights, they go crazy swimming all around the aro. they've been in the same tank for 6+ months now... no aggressive fish.. no fighting..

could it possibly be the fact that there's two of them? they're always together, schooling side by side........:ROFL::screwy:
 
i kept paroons before very graceful fish but they (at least mine) hated a strong current. check if you have any powerheads or filter outputs that may be causing strong water movement
 
They could just be uncomfortable. Have you tried watching them without them seeing you? Perhaps they are just scared of you. Or something else is making them timid. Like a brightly colored poster or picture or something. Just a thought.
 
strange... mine seem to love the current.
they basically catch the current coming out of the powerhead and just swim in it all day. If i take the powerhead out or turn it off, they move over to where the current from the external filter is and swim in that.

the current bounces off the front of the tank, so, they face the front glass swimming and ride the current.... if you understand what i mean.

all of the swimming in the current happens basically with their stomachs touching the ground.

it seems like it's strictly light related. as soon as it gets a little dark, they just swim everywhere. i could be standing right in front of the tank and they don't care. they swim and roam around. i even tried using a flashlight and spotlight them. they don't seem to care and continue roaming.
as soon as i turn on the tank lights (T8s) they run to the bottom and catch the current.

anyone ever heard of fish not liking a certain type of light? or could it be
that they still need to grow a bit?

i bought these fish after i saw videos of them roaming around.

heres a pic to just give you guys an idea...
maybe its just what i gotta live with.;)

i have 5 large id sharks and your sharks are my sharks big brothers ...
over the years of living with my gentle gaints i have adapted thier home to thier needs. not too much info on this guys s it was all try and error .
I might even get my sharks to breed ):):):) fingers crossed

i have come to know that id sharks dont like bright lights.
when they were in a tank years ago every morning would be a big spishie slpash when those lights would go on
my sharks live in a 500 gallon easyset pool in my basment with what lighting u ask????

two (60 watt normal blub) 9 watt sprial engery blubs that u would put in a living room lamp
i think it puts out 2400k it makes the water look a bit yellow when it isnt but the sharks like it. and thats what matters to me

they also have some surface floting plants to cast shadows for them

prehaps your paroons sharks react much the same way
is it possible u could turn off one blub and only use one. see if they are happier then and swim more about

your tank looks nice and bright in your pics and with the whitish sand
it sounds really bright
keep pics coming as they grow.
i would find me one but thier big tail would smash my pool apart

one day when i bluid wood pond :P
 
actually my lighting isn't as bright as it looks in the pics.. i just upped the iso on the camera.
and of the 4 possible t8s, i actually only use 1 t8. but i suspect even that one t8 is too bright. i may just go with a lower wattage t8 or a different temp. what you're saying actually seems to make sense.

what was confusing me was when i used my flashlight (powerful LED, much brighter focused light than any tank light) it didn't seem to phase them. the brightness of the sand could be the factor here like you mentioned.

I've had a few and think they are fantastic fish. Mine got too large for my 15 so I moved them to the big tank.The first time I had seven (later 1 died) and six got to 36" before they died. They swam in all levels of the water and preferred 2 feet deep to 9 feet deep. The second time I had 3 but they became too aggressive so I gave them to a hobbyist with an indoor pond.
