Hi Boys + Girls

I have a little problem.

This past weekend my in-laws came to visit and on Saturday the wife and mother in-law went to do there thing in the shopping centres.

When they returned they pulled out a gift for me witch was a plastic bag with a 6” pink dyed parrot chiclid in it (happy days).:irked:

I don’t like these fish for so many reasons apart from being dyed.

Now do I keep the fish and see if I start to like him?
Do I take it to a shop and try to exchange it for something?
Or do I just wait for the jaguar to get tired of it and maybe it will solve my problem for me?

I would keep it since it was a gift. I don't like them much either aside from the fact it is wrong to dye a fish. I would not buy one because it just encourages them to keep doing it. Chances are since it was dyed it won't live as long anyway.

only you can decide what to do. personally, if you really don't want it, then I would talk to an lfs and see if you could trade it in for some store credit. :)

I agree with this. If you are serious about your tank then you probably feel that it is sacred and that you should decide what goes in it.

I personally think that parrots have interesting behavior but no matter what fish it is if it doesn't feel right in your tank then you should find it a good home.

if that happened to me.. i would very gently tell my spouse how much i appreciate and love the thoughtfullness of their gift, but then would explaine to them exactly what it was that they bought.

they'll probably be so ticked at the pet store, they'll take it back themselves for an exchange or refund to go buy somewhere else.

Ditto.
And buying animals as a gift without knowing if the reciever wants something like that, is not pretty clever. Even though the thought probably was a nice one.

I agree with you Ang, but also disagree. I think he should keep it. Just because his wife and mother inlaw is showing support to the hobby. Sometimes when you explain and return gifts, non fish people could take it the wrong way and then have bitter feelings. They just don't know and still will think that you don't like the pretty fish. Wifey could get mad just cuz it was something that her and her mom did together for her husband. Or........ They could understand, and everything will be great. I'm just giving insight on what else could happen.....

Any chance we could see some pics of him? I thought they usually die or loose their color before they could reach 6". Maybe he was dyed later in life.
