Parrot Fish

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
when I moved up to Maryland here recently, I came across the same kind of problem. My nephew and wife's grandma wanted to get the boy a fish to put in my tank. Well I tried to explain that an 8" red devil isn't going to get along with another fish, but you know how 4 year olds are.

So we went to the shop and he went nuts over an oscar. Needless to say he was barely in the tank for 5 minutes before the beating began, and that's with a bunch of people right up on the glass. An hour later he was on his way back.

I feel really bad for that Oscar, it was very pretty, but at least it will live.

I agree with you Ang, but also disagree. I think he should keep it. Just because his wife and mother inlaw is showing support to the hobby. Sometimes when you explain and return gifts, non fish people could take it the wrong way and then have bitter feelings. They just don't know and still will think that you don't like the pretty fish. Wifey could get mad just cuz it was something that her and her mom did together for her husband. Or........ They could understand, and everything will be great. I'm just giving insight on what else could happen.....

well yeah, maybe.

i think if they were bitter about it or mad about it, thats their own fault. I honestly think if he explained the process of dying fish to them and why he needs to take it back, they would be willing to put it in the bag for him...
i dont know. In this situation, i wouldnt worry about stepping on toes since its something i feel strongly about.
Just like you wouldnt want a puppy if it came from a puppy mill.
Then you're just encouraging puppy mills by purchasing one.

Its the same thing.

IMO

Agree totally with ang!

i would just keep it around... i HATED parrot fish!!! but then my roomate brought a pair home.... we put them in the tank and i still hated them....but now....they are ok with me...they are not my favorite fish by any means, but they are ok.... they are so big and stupid its actualy comical...like the clowns of the fish world.... they try to act fierce but cant hurt andything more than a fry becasue their mouth issues.... they are just plain funny!

I think I should keep it because im trying to get the wife to grant me some more space for a 120gal and giving the fish away might loose me some brownie points in that department and the parrot seems to be settling in to the tank, the only problem that he has is that there is another Jag in the tank and he can’t go in with the African’s so I think he is on borrowed time. At least he is quite big so he should be able to stand his ground for a while.

This is the perfect opportunity to go buy a new fish tank for this fish. Explain that your fish were beating up on it and you didnt want anything to happen to such a precious gift so you were forced to go get another tank for this fish. These things can always breed opportunity

Keep! I got a couple of died bps and before i new it, they turned into big beautiful bright orange parrots. When i bought them they were a neon green. I dont have a jag, but my aggressive jacks and convicts wouldnt even bother with the time of messing with them. The Bps were no threat, they were hardy and clueless.

ya the other fish tend not to attack the parrots....also i use to keep mine with my africans...before i knew better.... they did great in with the africans.....and they love the salty water
