I find it amazing that people read something a few times "no SA cichlids can hybridize" and they take it as fact and don't even leave the door open that it just might still happen. I agree there are no known cases where this has happened yet, but I believe there are some combinations that are more likely to be viable and potentially produce hybrids. I agree that in this case it is extremely unlikely, but I would never say never.
One of my favorite sayings:
"The person who says it cannot be done should not interrupt the person doing it." - Chinese proverb
Hiya thanks for believing that it is possible, but sadly the parents ate the eggs as some first timers do. But In saying that they had not turned white so that means they were fertilised, no?
Not necessarily. They can look good for several days before they turn. How many days old were the eggs? Did you see any dark spots or eyes in the eggs? Unfertilized eggs can be deceiving and look good longer than you would think as long as they are kept clean by the parents. I had an umbi lay eggs that looked ok for three full days before they turned as they were never fertilized (no male).
