Parrots have Bred !

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
It is not that they are hard to spawn but that the males are sterile. This is because the Blood parrot is a hybrid. The supplier or should I say creators of these fish have fertile males but never ship them. If they did their business would be done as we could turn out thousands of our oqn. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news.

+1 to Wild Bill
Yes, they are laid eggs very often in any aquarium but we don't have a "good male" to fertilize the eggs.
There is a Asian Restaurant in San Marcos, CA with a display tank with these blood parrot, the first time these parrot liad eggs he (the onwer) so happy and told me he will get ton of babies fish and it's a good sign for his business, I brushed his bubble and said there won't be any babies at all and the eggs will turn while in a day or 2 then the parrot will eat all the eggs. We even bet for a week of Free food if I win...Of course I got 1 week of easy free meals :)

Guys I have and idea from my microbiology class that if a hybrid is produced then if you breed the F1 female with the male parents then I guess the F2 fry males will be fertile to.
But still then where to find a fertile male.
No theory works if you don't have strong base.

That's question I couldn't answer since I have tried order male one online almost from every website that selling blood parrot, from trusted LFS and none of them work...I gave up :P
*We have some breeder members here so they might help you out but I doubt about it.

Aqua Tank is on the right track here but no one knows for sure what makes a BP. You might try a young male Midas or Red Devil with your femaleas it is believed these fish are in the BP mix. You will get fry but will have to wait until you can sex the fry and breed the best female back to a male Midas or RD. Then you have to wait for those fry to mature and try and find a fertile male from that spawn. You would then take that male and breed back to a top class BP female. This process would go on until you could produce BP's of your own but still not all males would be fertile. If you were lucky this could take you at least 4 years and a lot of tanks. So it is not impossible but a long tedious process. This is why most people just buy store bought BP's.
My wife and I were going to try and breed Red Texas until R.D. explained this to me.
