wood works if you waterproof it.. acrylic/plexi/plastic is prettymuch a standard... you can use prettymuch whatever works for you as long as its waterproof..

thanks ill let him know.....My fish tank came with a top made out of glass.but when he toold me he made one out of partical baord i wasnt to sure about it......THank you PPL

Partical board will eventually rot in humid areas. As for the dripping, not a big deal in the meantime.

Many particle boards have formaldehyde in them...

Here is some info ...

Urea formaldehyde resin is the cheapest and easiest to use. It is used for most non-water resistant boards.

Yeah, not a great idear!! You could use EggCrate though! It works great!! Unless you are trying to trap in the humidity...lol...

Just get with your buddy one day, buy some wood, and make a top for the tank. Give it solid sides and a swing up hinged door or side by side doors and an eggcrate back that you can remove. We did that all through college, and got pretty good at it after the first 3-4, hehe. By the 5th-last ones, they looked like they could be sold in a fish store. Make it nice and then polyurethane it about 4 times and set it out for a couple days to dry completely, and viola! Nice lookin accessory he can use for a good long time.
