I had the same problem in my 210. Even though I have filter socks/floss in the sump I was still unhappy with all the particulate matter floating around (my geos stir up a lot of stuff from the gravel). The flow rate through the overflows just wasn't enough to draw out all the floaters.
I added two Nu-Clear canisters, a 100 micron and a 25 micron in series. With an Iwaki MD55 pump it does around 700 gph at 8 psi. It made a huge difference and my water is now nice and clear.
If you do cut a couple of new holes in the top (best option for plumbing) I have a tip: Take a scrap of foamboard and tape it to the underside of the acrylic under where you are going to drill. It will keep any bits of acrylic from ending up in your tank, just carefully remove the foam when you're done.
Good luck!
