Hello, I am thinking about getting a payara. I saw some at the LFS for $40 and have been wanting one for a while now but I am not too sure about this one. From what I understand, I want an armatus instead of a scomb because the scombs do not do well in captivity? is this true? Also, I know that they need fast moving oxygenated water to do well once they start getting bigger. are there any other tips?

Here is a picture, I am still not sure about which one this is but based on reading some of the ID threads it looks like a scomb to me.

Please help and thank you!

thats no scomb, its a tatuaia. very nice fish grow bigger than scombs not as big as armatus. unless u r running 200 plus gallons i wouldnt go near the armatus his growth rate is off the charts. tats are docile and can get along with other species. I currently keep 5 in a 125 gal, a really good fish to own.

I heard Scombs also have a teeth shedding process that almost and most of the time does kill them....is this true?
Never heard of that one but the fish that the OP is after is a good buy at that price.

Another member (payara man) asked the same lfs to order those guys in... they are most likely red tail payara tat... his had some weird ich/thing that was present at the lfs and the fish died...

Yeah I picked up one of these guys man and it died because it had lymphocystus, It's a disease that cannot be cured and I tried to treat it with high temp and salt and he just could not take it anymore so I found him floating, Please don't buy them and waste your money because they were very douchey to me when I told them what had happened and they still have me full credit but I don't recommend getting one. And yes all of those are Tat's which will max at 18" and still need very fast running water. I can also prove I bought one because they still have "Hold for Brandon" on the tank lol. I'm going tomorrow around 3:30 when they get there shipment, Are you gonna go tomorrow? If so we could meet up.

I saw that and thought it was ick on them but when I went in just recently the lumps were gone but you said it was incurable?
