1. Looking for pointers on the species ID.

Looks like a payara scomb to me. Try feeders first (show it died in front of him for a few days or even weeks as you give him died and also live feeders. Once you see him more beefed up than try either shrimp or tilapia and cut in thin slices to make it look like a feeder and release into tank and repeat til he gets off of it. I do tilapia over shrimp any day of the week for bulking 👌

Coming up on 3 months soon. I thought it had taken a piece of fish or a few in the second month with us but now I am doubting because lately it has been ignoring all fish cuts. I'll try to cut them longer and skinnier per your advice.

I loved keeping scombs payara in the past and once they eat they do it like a machine I found every other day.

Unlike other payara the scombs needed the food to be above them so they could strike it from below so I would try and get small pieces of prawn or lancefish to go in the flow and end up just above their head then they would strike it. It would be a fine art in the end and the only way they would eat but they would always go to frozen

Hi bro 😃 cool scomb! I had one a light year ago. I tied fishing line to gut loaded silversides and attached to a tiny powerhead.
Mostly I feed live feeder guppies he was a finicky eater reminds me of south american leaf fish thriving in a tank full of guppies.
I used a small pacu to teach him to grab an occasional krill from the surface.
My cool guy I absolutely loved that fish! Keep in touch.
