I Currently have a 125 that has fish ranging from 6-10". The only fish out during the day are an odoe pike and a needlefish (xenentodon cancila i think) I have a marble goby thats 8-9" in there that comes out to swim the tank durig the day occasionally but he doesnt bother anything, even during feeding time, lazy fellow. I love the look of a payara. Is there a species of payara that would fit comfortably in my tank? most i have read about get way too big. The Hepsetus Odoe is 7.5" and the Needlefish is 7"

Thanks in advance

Red Tail Payara aka Tat. Problem is they are slow growers and it's rare to see one bigger than 10" (especially 4 sale). Maybe a Ralph (except not from the Payara family) except the Odoe would likely kill him as Odoes dislike silver fish (most atleast)

No sir, I am not saing that... I'm saying your chances of success are just slim. There have been success with Odoe n other tankmates. You just don't see this combo enough for people to give you "experience info". I say try it if you like to push the limits, otherwise get more info and get to know your Odoe before adding light colored fish with him.

I had a 9" Odoe housed with pollys, dats, catfish etc... Took him home and with in 5hrs my 14" Goliath had TONS of gash marks :( (few years back)

DB had success with a few Odoe's and Armatus/Dorado. I think there are several factors w/his success... Tank size, feeding schedule and over all fish characters (jmo).

Ive kept odoe with tats, scombs, and raphs. I currently have 4 odoe ranging from 7'' to 9'' with 3 tats ranging from 7'' to 10''. there is also a 5'' scomb in the tank as well. never any problems out of the odoe. ive heard, seen, and read about odoe being aggressive and even killing tank mates. When I have kept odoe in small groups 3 or more never any problems. when kept in pairs or 1 per tank, they always seem to be aggressive toward tankmates. So its a crap shoot imo. I wouldnt go with raph in the 125 extremely claustrophobic, tats or scombs would be a better choice. If your odoe isnt raping the tank now odds are he will be ok with new payara.

Currently have a 2 year old Scomb thats been living with an Odoe for over a year. If you do plan on adding a Payara I'd stick with one of the Hydrolycus species and probably QT it 1st for a few weeks to insure it's not sick from transport and if it is, it doesn't have the stress of the other fish making it worse. Also helps it to get used to feeding before competition becomes an issue.

Okay I think I might try it then, because mine is not too agressive besides when he's really hungry and he's never attacked tankmates big enough. He's always scared when I put my hands or a net in the tank and swims to the other side. I have never seen any payara in my local fish stores though, so what size do they usually arrive at? And I have him with a Royal Clown Knife too does that count as a silver fish? If so then I shouldn't have any problems because he hasn't gone after him in the last couple of months.

Theres no sure fire guarantee any co-hab will work with predatory carniverous fish, so I'd strongly suggest a back-up plan - large tank that handle either the payara or odoe if things go south.

That sounds like a good idea. I think I saw some payaras on Aquabid they just say "slendertooth characins", what about them? I think they are cynodon gibbus but i'm new to payaras so idk. I haven't found any information on cynos, would they work as well as a hydrolycus species?

They are Raphs, sorry. I want to get a scomb, but I have read that they randomly die around 10", and I don't want a fish that does that. Is there a way to avoid this? I'm guessing that there isn't but it's always better to ask.
