Howdy,

I am not up and running on my payara ID'ing :grinno:
I saw these at the LFS. Anyone? Max size?

Thanks for your help,
HarleyK

Top pic isn't a hydro species.

Charax sp. possibly. Green striped denton comes to mind.

Bottom I'de say looks like a Scomb but lacks a dark dot where the side fin is. So I guess I'm unsure on that one too, but leaning towards Hydrolycus Scomberoides.

they are right about the top one but thebottom to me looks like a rhaphiodon gibbus. they are pretty rare but i think its because they dont do well in aquariums. i had two before and they died for no reason and never grew even though they ate alot. was this what they looked like?

Thanks a lot, guys. That's what makes MFK so great
Upon reading up, I realized that these fish are a no-go!

Thank God I'm not an impulse-buyer :D

Yeah, the bottom pic is a gibbus as vampTrev stated. Just curious, what makes them a no-go? I'd think the top ones (charax sp?) might be cool to own.

I am in the market for tank mates for my wolf. Looks like neither one qualifies...
Charax max out around 6'' and are considered scale-eaters ... they either end up as dinner for my Hoplias (1' now, still growing), or they pick him. I wouldn't like either outcome.

Gibbus max out around 11''. Considering the possibility that my wolf can reach 2', that's also dinner. An expensive one, I may add :grinno:

Thus, again, thanks for everyone's input!

I think you have that backwards. Gibbus reach only about 6-7 inches and charax can get up to about a foot in length depending on which species. I think George had some 10"ers for sale not long ago. As far as tankmates for a Hoplias, I dont think you'll have much luck, but that's depending on tank size. Mala's rarely get to the 2 foot mark in an aquarium. It also depends on which varient you have. While some can reach around the 20" mark (like the Goias strain) most usually top out at around 16". Most people that have wolves over 18" usually buy them at that size. Either way, good luck bro.
