I'm sure they are banned due to the climate being hospitable to their natural conditions. If people released them into southern Fla, could you imagine the news reports lol. Super Piranha Found in Local Rivers!!!

They probably just banned a huge list of predatory fish when they had issues with pythons/boas, etc being let loose and multiplying.

South Florida is PERFECT for ATF. I'm not sure why the state banned them and Dorados but not payaras. Florida does have a fairly extensive list of banned fish.

I I had a huge atf, I wouldn't release it, i would obviously sell it!

I'm a Floridian and I've never heard of any wild ATF. The reason they're banned is that if they get loose, they'll thrive.

Out of the blue but why did they banned the Asian arowana and not the silver the Asians are at Least a couple hundred $ or even thousands and silvers are 30$. And why would some spend that much then release it. I would understand with the payara's I wouldn't want a 3' armatus swim by me when I'm swimming or the over populate the southern lakes then they lose there value like the RTC. But I go fishing and catch a 2500 $ super red Asian arowana that's a different story.

Totaly missed this thread, but you've gotten some very imformative respones from the members here. No need for me to repeat anything that's been said.

Asians are banned because they're critically endangered in the wild. They're a IUCN Category 1 animal, like black rhinos or other such rare critters. As such, trade in those fish is completely prohibited in the United States as a whole.

Most of the fish on the restricted and conditional lists for Florida are banned because they have the potential to decimate the native populations of fish. Cichlids and payara from equatorial regions in the Amazon can't thrive outside of warmwater canals in southern FL, but fish like ATF and arowanas that can deal with temperate temperatures are much more of a threat, and could be devastating if they got loose. Florida's restrictive, but understandable, laws is a key factor in my decision not to go back there once I'm done with my time in the Army.
