Sorry DMack, I just wanted to give you the right info on your payara, but those aren't redtails, they're scombs. Check through some of my posts on payara IDing, and you'll read some of the distinguishing characteristics of scombs, tats, and armatus. They still look nice and healthy. Good luck with them bro. And keep us updated with their progress.

thanks man...I asked dom and he gave me a heads up on them.I had thought they were scombs but wasnt 100% as I dont know too much about them... even though they are only scombs I like em alot...may dig in a lil deeper later on if I dont lose interest in them and get a nice group or so.

They're definately cool fish to own bro. If you can find them though, I'd definately look into getting some redtails. Armatus are bada$$ too, but are a lot harder to find and when you do they will cost a pretty penny. Redtails are a great middle ground. Not nearley as expensive as armatus, and way more aggressive, hardy, and colorful than scombs. If you like your scombs, I'd definately recommend looking into getting some redtails. You won't be disappointed.

Thanks ;) question...an exporter I deal with in SA had mentioned also yellow tails...are these just a variant of a redtail?

put up a quick vid and a few new pix:

that's the problem with common names. Scombs sometimes have yellowish fins. I think Aquascape was selling some scombs with yellow fins. I've also seen some redtails sold as yellowtails. I've owned a redtail that was completely silver and black. One of the easiest way to tell is the markings near the gill plate. Scombs have dots, while redtails and armatus have more of a crescent moon shape. Scombs also have black dots where the pectoral fins meet the body. You could also just ask him what color their bodies are, and if they are gold and have red fins, you got yourself a redtail. Armatus and scombs dont typically have solid gold bodies. They may have a sheen or reflect gold, but redtails often display a solid gold body color. Good luck on your quest bro.
