Yesterday my husband and I decided to browse through LFS, not really to buy anything but aquarium silicone (he's fixing one of my versa tops.) Go to this one spot and it had red tail payara. My husband looked at me and said, "You want it don't you?" as much as I did I said no. I have two baby Armatus' that when they are big enough will join my red tail.

I did want it though I am not going to lie! But we moved on, went to the next LFS a few miles down. I noticed they had a few beautiful red tail barracudas, across the barracuda tank they had red tail gouramis, red severums...and one really messed up payara! I stared at it and my husband said "oh boy!" I looked for the price of the payara but it wasn't listed on the tank, so I figured he was moved from another tank where he got bullied and beat up badly.

I ask the guy that worked there, "How much for the half dead Payara?" after giving me a weird look he said it's $40.99, pointing at what said "SM.RT BARRACUDA $40.99" My husband gave me a strange look. I got my red tail for $160! The man then went on to tell me he normally doesn't give discounts for beat up fish, but he would sell it to me for $40! I said ok I'll take it. Now I don't know about you...but Barracudas look nothing like payaras! But I wasn't going to start arguing now! I wanted to get this guy home and get him some serious TLC. My husband and I were talking about how they seriously mislabeled a fish and why would they display a fish in such bad condition?

Anyway, doesn't matter anymore, he's home with me in recovery! He ate like a pig! So currently its doing fine! I think he is another red tail, from what is left on its tail. I guess it was meant for me to help this guy out, I would have spent $160 on the perfect show quality fish in the first LFS, instead I paid $40 for a beat up one. And you know...I am so happy I made the right choice to get him, and give him a chance at a good fishy life!:)

Congrats, awesome deal! What size is it? Doesn't look bad at all. Those fins will grow back like normal. I had my scomb get his fins bitten off, almost to the flesh, and it grew back like normal. Glad to see him go to a good home.

Thanks Sm0ke! He's around the 5 inch mark maybe a little more. He looked worse yesterday, he had a lot of marks on his body like scratches, and was so thin you could probably use him as a credit card through the swipe machine!

Glad to see this guy get them loving home he deserves. Too many fish out there are doomed to miserable lives. With a little tlc he'll be back to normal in no time. Great save.

cool story, sounds like you made the right choice with this one :)

the tail doesn't look too bad. I figure if it's eating well, it's off to a good start!

Great story! Most people wouldn't have taken that fish just because he was beaten up. That guy deserves a good home with someone like you. :)
