Payara rubbing her teeth against the glass - Help

Is that payara a Scomb or a Raph?? I have a friend that had a foot and a half raphiodon in a 200 gal and it did that same thing. teeth out the side. I know for a fact he has good water conditions in his tanks and still did it. he told me that it was his favorite fish in the world and that the raph's are also sensitive to tank size. after it reached a foot, it never left one corner. started to rub and ended up having the snaggle tooth look yours does. he told me his did it to tell him the fish needed a bigger home. maybe this could be the reason yours is doing it. I do know that scombs and raphs are sensitive to tank mates as well and they like to be left alone. if stress is the factor from tankmates, might need to move him to a same sized or larger tank with fish that wont bother or try to pick territories with your payara. just my input...

Hi HCN

She's a tatauaia payara (Hydrolycus tatauaia). She stopped rubbing against the glass after I remove the "outsider tooth". What she is doing right now seems a normal behaviour...just open her mouth and streching some muscles sometimes. She will go to a 140 gallon DT in a month.
I really love to have raphs too! Gorgeous sabbertooth! Sadly they are not so common in our LFS.

Thank's for your imput!

I had a large red tail awhile back that would do the same thing.
Never knew why but it lived large and was fine.
I would use a small fishing rod and jig the silver sides up and down the fish tank until he hit them. Sometimes I would tie the silver side to power head with fishing line.

No problem :)
I wish tat payaras were common here. No payara is common where I'm at. Ive never seen a tat or a raph here other than the ones the store keeper had in his personal tank. Every blue moon a scomb will drop in. Last month there were a ton of armatus. I picked one up but it got a fun gas in my grow out tank and died. Had to tear the whole thing down and clean it. So now I'm just coasting with what I got. If another one shows up I'll be buying it for sure.
