Guys I have an opportunity to buy 2 payara right now around 8 inches each with yellow tails! They are labeled as scomberoids. I thought scombedroids had dark tails? What's the id on these. The lfs does not want them so they are cheap. Are they a variation of red tail payara and get 12inch+.

More than likely they are Tats, Yellow tail varient. Ive had several of these now, not that rare as most of them turn red after a year or so.

Without pics a proper ID is impossible. I'm inclined to think tatauaia as well, but we can't know for sure.

Thanks so much! So then they are definetly not scomberoids?

I'd hesitate to say that for sure. I REALLY want to see these fish. If they're cheap even for scombs, what's to lose from getting them? In SOCAL you could aways turn around and get your money back with no real trouble.

I've seen them labeled yellow tail scombs before, but I've always thought they looked like tatauaia. I'm in for the pics, that's the only true way to ID them.

have you already seen them? I'm guessing that they are yellow tail tats too. you sure they aren't armatus right?

Best I could do...

Can you See the bright yellow! If they are Tats I will get them. I just would rather not purchase any scombs due to space issues.

Yes I saw them I could make a move on many of them this weekend again. Some are pushing 10"+. There was no Armatus in the bags, I was dreaming of a huge Armatus buy the whole ride there. They were 40 each for the wholesale price.
