I found 20 dollar baby payaras at m LFS, does anyone know growth rates and eventual size in captivity? :headbang2

from what I've read, they grow fairly slow and seldom reach the 12" mark in the home aquarium. However, they can reach 40" or so in the wild.

most die off at around the foot mark sadly no one knows why for shure ether

There very finicky, slightest water change(chemistry) and they die. Also very skittish, must have perfect water with extra airation. Very hard to lean off live food

hey how long in a 29? if i upgrade in summer with a 55 would that do?

I have one that is about six/seven inches. He has put on about two inches in four months. So far he has been pretty easy going. I do my normal water changes from the tap and it does not phase him. My filter broke last week and the tank got nasty and he was fine. I also have weaned onto krill and sometimes pellets. He weaned really quickly. My second one was a different story. It was not possible to wean him off of feeders, he grew slower and my endi got him. they are neat fish, but nothing special.

I was wondeering are they legal in san diego and also can you put them with a foot long ghost knife.

They Look cool. I have a question regarding there feeding, I have one approx 4", Only seems to eat every three odd days and ignores food otherwise. Is this normal?

Mine does the same thing, only eats every couple of days. He's about the same size as yours. If he seems healthy otherwise, so I wouldn't be too worried.
