I'm buying a cheap old pc to mess around with.

The seller stated the specs as:

  • AMD Athlon64 3500+
  • 1GB DDR400 RAM
  • 80GB SATA Hard Disk
  • 16X Asus DVD-ROM
  • Nvidia Geforce 6600GT 256MB
  • 1.44 MB Floppy Disk Drive
All that for SG$150.

I'm not too happy with the processor so I'm wondering if I'd be able to use a AMD Athlon 64 X2 5000+ Black Edition on it instead which another guy is selling for SG$70.

what motherboard does it have? It's probably not compatible with the dual core you're trying to use.

That's the problem. The seller hasn't got a clue on all the techie stuff. Lol.

Correct me if I'm wrong.

Amd 64 uses 939 socket whilst Amd 64 X2 can use 939 as well as AM2. Correct?

Hm, so it won't work, aye?

Decided to get this instead.

  • AMD64 X2 3800+ 2.0Ghz w/hsf
  • 3GB DDR2 RAM
  • MSI AM2 K9NGM Motherboard w/on-board graphics
  • 80GB IDE HDD
  • HEC 350W PSU
  • TDK DVD+/-RW
  • HEC Server ATX Case [ALL IN GOOD WORKING CONDITION]
$200

I'll still upgrade to the 5000+ black ed. processor though.

sounds much better, but why pay the 70 for not that much of an upgrade?

you will fill those 80gb in no time. invest in a bigger HD or add a 2nd internal to save media on

Also depending on what you are doing, MB with integrated graphics aren't worth crap
but surfing.
