I would say it would improve their odds of surviving greatly especially when it comes time to molt.

Thanks, much appreciated. I really like crayfish but it appears that the bigger ones would try to eat the gourami. So, I'm going to stick to the Mexican dwarf variety. And when the tank is well established, I will probably get a bamboo shrimp.
