Hey guys!
i am buying a couple of baby hystrix rays soon,
and i want to add a couple of oscar en pbass fish with them.

My question is, what is the best thing to do?
the will go in a tank which is 200x60x60 cm, which is aprox. 700 liters.
my experience with oscar fish is that its not a good idee to buy just 2 because you often end up with 2 oscar which who dont get allong. So im planning to buy 7 and keep the 2 ones which get allong. i would like to know what u guys think of that. i had some bad expierences with housing 3 oscars fish together, although that tank was allot smaller.

I dont have any expierence with peacock bass though. Is it so that 2 male fish of this kind wil end up in a drama as well? or wil they get allong since the tank is big enough'? im really keen to your comments about that, otherwise i will buy 7 of these ass wel and do the same thing.

Further more i would love to hear expierences of people who housed stingrays with these fish and the results. Furthermore im looking for exact growth figures from the pbass. are these similar as with the oscar fish?

thanks for your help!

Greetings,

Bart .. sorry for the gramatical errors, since im dutch!

The peacock's will out grow the Oscars for sure and eat them and may take a shot at the ray's. Very young ray's are very sensitive when small. The Peacock's I have now are 3''-5'' bigger then my ray. They do pick at his tail a bit and this can be stressful on young ray's. If you get the fish at a larger size you could probably pull it off. Raising all of them from young stages you are going to see growth difference's and losse a few imo.

I have an 11" oscar in a tank with several pbass in the 17-20" range and the pbass have shown no interest in him, but I introduced him when he was fully grown. I think if you start with a full grown Oscar, you'll be fine, but trying to grow them out together could be risky. Especially if you get something like a tem that grows really quick.

There are several male pbass in the tank, and I haven't noticed any aggression related specifically to them. The agression in my tanks seems to be more related to the species than the sex. Orinos can be mean SOBs, whereas my azuls, intermedia, monos and occels seem to be more mild mannered.

Wish I could offer more insight to rays, but the cool ones are not legal here. Your English is fine.

I have also found that introducing them all together I say about 10''+ would be the key to pulling this off but a peacock bass isn't going to last long in a 180g for more then a year and the ray will outgrow this size tank also. I think that's what 700L coverts to 180g.

high, come on.. i raised peacock bass and oscars together.. the peacock bass did NOT outgrow the oscars..

the problem i had with my oscars is that they ganged up on other fish, but they never bothered my peacock bass, they ganged up on my silver arowana before she was big enough to defend herself.

i wouldn't worry so much about the peacock bass with oscars as i would the rays with oscars.. i have no experience with rays, but they seem to be to be far too delicate, especially when young to deal with iceholes like oscars. and the mess that oscars make.

I am sorry I should have mentioned I have never owned Oscars before. I just figured the Peacock Bass would out grow them. The ray's I know for sure are delicate and will grow at a far lower growth rate. I knew someone who has owned Oscars would clerify that question for you.

i totally agree with cath...
young rays and aggressive cichlids dont go together.
