Peacock Bass Tips

Here's my story and hope someone can help :(

We bought a PB yesterday and today it's dead!

It was fine in the shop but when we put it in our 8x2x2" tank it wasn't as active. It was fine but it was more just swimming/hovering in one spot and wasn't as active as he had been in his original tank.

Then Hubby comes home, checks on him and he was swimming upside down towards the bottom of the tank but when the Texas tried to chase him he uprighted and swam away. After that he went back to the bottom of the tank and turned upside down again :(

Hubby put him in our smaller tank in hope to nurse him back to health but from the last time he swam, it hasn't been an hour and he's already died. We put anti-biotics and salt in the hospital tank but obviosly didn't help. I cannot believe how quickly he deteriorated, like I said, despite him swimming upside down when need be he was righting himself up and swimming away.

Hubby wants to go back and get another one, this one that we bought is quite large at nearly 30cm but the $ is quite steep so I don't want to buy another one for it to die in one day, that's $$$ down the drain.

We thought that PB are hardy fishes as we originally bought 2 baby ones, one was grabbed by an Arowana and the Aro had it in it's mouth for a few seconds, it was quite beaten up when we saved it. We put him on a hospital tank and he nursed back to life and was fine, 3 days later he was back to normal (stripe wasn't bright) but he was swimming normally...about 3 days after that, so 6 days after he was in the Aro's mouth he died...so maybe he didn't recover after all :(

Any advise as we don't want to just keep throwing $ down the drain. These are pellet trained and we've got checked PH levels, temp and nitrate and all are great.

Thanks in advance

Yes, I have a little knowledge I can share. First thing to know, these fish are far from hardy fish, especially as juvies. They are fragile, and extremely temperamental as far as water conditions and parameters go. Please test your water and let us know what all the levels are. This is crucial to the success of smaller bass. Second, a carni fish like an aro will eat it if it can fit it in its mouth. Put the bass in its own grow out tank or purchase one larger than the fish in its tank. Also understand that they will most likely eat anything they can fit in their mouths.

Pellet training is crucial, but not an absolute must. People forget that these fish bodies are designed to extract all the nutrients it can from feeders prior to discarding the rest, although I am also a fan of pellet training we cannot forget the obvious. If you need any help pellet training I've had really good turn outs on my juvies.

If your fish died that fast, I would take a water sample to the fish store and respectfully ask for a replacement or a refund. Assuming the parameters are fine, and your fish wasnt killed by your aro, I see no reason why the LFS would not oblige.

I hope this helps!

Hi everyone.
I bought the fish 2 weeks ago and they are now settling in.
Are doing very well. Bought 2 for $30 at 2".
