Peacock Mantis Break glass?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Yes, the subject of this thread is the PEACOCK mantis.

Peacock Mantis, Odontodactylus scyllarus, grown to about 8 inches in length....Never seen "any" documented proof that this can smash a tank, and untill i do see proof, it will be written off as crap.....Sorry, but, i know they have a bad rep for shrimps, but, i do believe that this perticular mantis is very hyped up...

Has anyone been "smacked" by one? I keep reading about how they can break your finger... I've ben hit a couple of times by mine but more suprised, than anything else. Not even a bruise.

Only been smacked by a smaller mantis, about 3 inches.....yes it hurts, but as you said Puffer, its the shock/surprise of it more than anything..i did not know a mantis was in the tank when i got spannered by one...

Let's all look at the numbers, shall we?

The peak raptorial appendage impact force of Odontodactylus scyllarus is 1501 Newtons and can crack the shells of mollusks, which have tensile strengths ranging 30–167 MPa.
(This information can be found in much more detail here.)

Now the tensile strength of tempered glass, one of the stronger of the types of glass used in aquariums, ranges from 27 MPa to 62 MPa.
(This information can be found in much more detail here.)

Isn't it now conceivable that a peacock mantis shrimp could break a glass tank with a lower tensile strength than something that it destroys on a regular basis?

Wow, that came out way more condescending than I intended. Sorry for that.

Also I just double checked my glass numbers and I'm not too sure about them since that site I referenced only gave a general glass tensile strength, and I can't find a definite number for tempered glass. But I'm still pretty sure they can crack glass, just not sure they really want to.

While different materials have different "breaking points" it's been already proven in myth busters that the myth about breaking a car window isn't all that easy underwater. This factor always gets overlooked when dealing with a mantis strike. Was the strike measured out of water? If it was, This would throw off the overall striking abilities of the mantis and skew the "potential reports".

There is video proof out there of them breaking standard 1/8" window pane glass but nothing more. My guess is that they just dont have the power required to do it.

he never said he saw a peacock mantis....just a big mantis...which i for 1 would like to see

whats the the smashers title? i've heard another type aswell.....can't remember
