No not at all. He behaved completely normal other that opening his mouth real large on breaths and swimming more near the top half of the tanks vs swimming lower where the rocks are.

Are you sure the female spit out the fry? If she still is holding them, it sounds like he died due to something in the water. Some fish are more sensitive to ammonia, nitrites, etc. These can randomly kill a single fish like a sniper, albeit it is more common to see more than one fish showing signs of poisoning.

Yea I'm sure she spit. A couple fry were still alive. Plus there what floating pieces of ripped apart fry and a chunk of what looked like regurgitated/spit up fry stuck on the intake.
