I hate to be alarmist, but I have been researching a very scary concept for a book I am writing. "Peak Oil" is the idea that we dont have to run out of oil for the world to "end," but rather, supply just has to decline, then big countries get aggressive (USA), little oil-producing countries get belligerent (Venezuela), and the **** hits the fan. As prices skyrocket, gas goes to 5.00 or more a barrel, we have rolling brownouts, then blackouts, then perhaps no electricity at all. And you know what that means--no more in-home aquariums.

I was prepared to dismiss this until I got serious about researching it. Plug "peak oil" into Google and you'll see what I mean. Some very intelligent and well-informed people are saying this may not be just another crazy doomsday scenario. In fact, the Hirsch report, commissioned by the US government in 2005, reached the same conclusions as the so-called crackpots did--the transition to drastically reduced oil consumption in the US will cost literally trillions of dollars and may last a very long time. Some people believe it could usher in what they call a "post-industrial stone age." I sure dont like the sound of that.

Any thoughts???

Supply and demand. The higher oil goes, the more demand there will be for alternative sources of power. Higher oil prices may be good for the world in the long run. The market always dictates what companies produce. Example: the catalytic converter. People said it was impossible to meet emission requirements, companies spent money to invent the technology, and the technology was found. Eventually, gas powered cars will be a "throwback" and we will all be driving a new technology that has the same performance with much less or no emissions. Economics at it's finest. If the government wants to speed up this process, all they have to do is raise the tax on oil products. I work in the flooring industry, and a carpet fiber was recently invented that outperforms petroleum based fibers (i.e. nylon, polyester, olefin) and is made out of corn. Welcome to the market based economy!

By the way, European countries are already paying much higher gas prices than we are due to hefty taxes on gas.

Someone will come up with an alternate when oil starts to get too expensive to supply.Too much $ and power involved.Right now too much profit in oil any tech to replace it is gonna get squashed.

There isn't any squashing the demand of this country. When demand is great enough, it will happen.

By the way, I demand cheaper Zebra Plecos!

By the time World War III hits, there won't be enough oil to fight about. If one out of 50 chinese families bought a car, the oil supply would be gone in three years.

There will be alternate energy sources in the future. I don't think this scenario is quite as morbid as it sounds.

I agree.
